Mainly to get experience with installing the software and basic managemetn of the server.

Stage 1 : Get the server up and running on a basic install on a C6100 node. To utilise a servers resources, some people run multiple DayZ instances (VMs or bare metal). Strangely I have not found many hard server requirements other than the software is single threaded, a CPU over 3GHz is prefered and each server instance is locked to 2GB ram. Obviously a fast database would be prefered. This is what the MySQL database is used for.

The Arma II OA server uses a Hive to control the game (Zombie locations, item locations, cleanup scripts etc) and players (positions, equipment, etc). Whilst the first two are Windows apps, people are also running then on a Linux environment with Wine and the like. THe DayZ Epoch Mod (plus addon scripts for enhancements, anti-hack, missions etc). The Arma II Operation Arrowhead Beta code. So the server software is freely available and the software ecosystem revolves around a few core parts

As I have a C6100 node (or 2) going unused I thought I would build a DayZ Epoch server for lan play (me and the kids) and maybe open it up to local players (possibly upgrade to a Gbit fibre connection). There are many of these servers out there and a number of hosting companies allow you to rent them as a full package (game installed etc). Epoch, amoungst other things, adds a currency, trading system and base building.Īs the game is a MMO game, it uses a centralised server. Other mods have sprung up around the DayZ mod including DayZ Epoch. It is aimed to be pretty realistic so you have to scavenge for food and water, treat wounds and infections, avoid getting killed by Zombies and interacting with other players as it is a MMO type game. I never really got in to Arma or Arma II but someone made a mod for Arma II called DayZ.ĭayZ, as you may have guessed, centered around surviving the Zombie apocalypse. Very tactical, dead means (in the game) dead, great fun commanding a group of tanks over hills in to battle leading from the front.Īs some will know, the brand moved to another team who turned it in to a dumbed down console version and the original developers (Bohemia Interactive Studios - BIS) went on to make ARMA, ARMA II and now ARMA III.

So I used to play the original Operation Flashpoint and enjoyed it very much.
